Nonintuitive Sacrifice

Updated: Aug 1, 2021

The following position is from Ding Liren versus Wesley So in 2016. I was studying the Catalan Opening, and I came across this incredible position. I felt like white had to have some kind of attack, but Stockfish said no. After forcing Stockfish to think for several minutes, it finally came up with this wonderful solution.

It is white to play. Can you find the unusual sacrifice? I will post the answer next week.

White can play 1.e3!! fxe3 followed by 2.Qh5+ I wasn't able get Stockfish to find the right answer, but White's attack is very strong. All of black's pieces are on the back rank. The various continuations are mind boggling, and I can play through them with you via the comments or via email if you are interested.

After I thought about my title, I suppose this type of sacrifice is actually quite intuitive for the adept attacking player. But for me, it didn't really cross my radar.
